From Small Inquiries to Million-RMB Orders: A Story of Trust, Persistence, and Problem-Solving

A true story of how a seemingly small client from Spain grew into a $145,000+ order. Learn how customization, honest communication, and never giving up on samples turned a slow start into a million-dollar partnership.

Project Behind-the-Scenes

In B2B sales, it's easy to judge a client by their first inquiry. A small request? A few questions? Endless back-and-forth? Many salespeople might lose interest.

But over the years, I have learned a different lesson: big opportunities often start small.

Today, I want to share a real story about a client from Spain. His first order? Over $140,000 USD.

But when we first met, he looked like just another small prospect — asking endless questions, testing ideas, and taking his time.

The Beginning: A Slow Start

The client was introduced to me by my manager in February 2021. He sent a product manual and asked a few questions. We talked about details, and then he said he needed to check with his boss.

A few days later, he ordered a few sample strings. Nothing big.

Over the following months, he continued to ask questions — about controllers, about chips, about installation. He never shared his full project plan. But I could tell: this was a client who had his own ideas. He was not just looking for a price. He was looking for a partner who could understand his vision.

The Turning Point: From Samples to Customization

More than a year passed. Then, in March 2022, the client started to show dissatisfaction with the existing product samples. He wanted something different. Something unique.

That was when I suggested: customization.

"If you want a product that truly fits your needs, we can design it for you."

We discussed mold costs. I told him about a similar project I had done for another client. I shared photos (for reference only, not for copying) and explained our process:

  • Share your design ideas

  • We will create a plan and a 3D sample ($100)

  • Then open the mold and start production

The client became more and more interested. A few days later, he sent his own design drawings.

The First Hurdle: A Design Flaw

When our engineers reviewed his design, we found an issue. His special installation method required a certain housing thickness, which made it impossible for the LEDs to fit into both lenses as he had designed.

Instead of simply saying "this won't work," I suggested a practical solution: we made two 3D samples — one with lenses, one without.

"If we do nothing, an idea remains just an idea. But when we actually build something, we may find it is different from what we imagined. You will understand when you see both samples."

The client received the samples, tested them, and chose the design without lenses. Then he asked me to make a PI for the mold cost: $3,000 USD.

The First Million-Dollar Order

Before paying the mold fee, the client told me his boss planned to order 300,000 pieces. We quoted the bulk order — over $100,000 USD.

I negotiated two options for the client:

  • Place the bulk order directly and waive the mold fee

  • Pay the mold fee first, then refund it after the bulk order

The client chose the second option. He paid the $3,000 mold fee that same night.

At that point, I knew the order was almost certain. But as expected, there were more changes.

  • First, the quantity increased to 350,000 pieces

  • Then, he added special power terminal cables (620 pieces)

  • Over the following days, he kept adjusting quantities and specifications

Finally, just before the May holiday, the order was confirmed: 370,000 lights + 680 accessories = over $140,000 USD.

The Nightmare of Sample Testing

But the story does not end there.

When the first samples were produced, they failed:

  • Center-to-center distance was not accurate enough

  • Wire colors and connectors did not match his special installation requirements

We had to redo the samples.

The second samples were better — but still had small errors (about 3mm tolerance). When the client tested them, he found other issues: glue leakage, inconsistent finishing.

At this point, the client was worried. He had already invested time and money. Would the bulk order ever be right?

How We Kept His Trust

Throughout this difficult process, I communicated honestly and frequently.

When the first samples failed, I told him:

"Don't worry. In the second sample, I will take more pictures and videos for you to confirm one by one. I will take photos with a ruler so you can see the exact distance between each LED."

When the second samples still had problems, I said:

"Success is all about going through countless failures. Now we have only one problem to solve. We will change the housing design so that each LED can be fixed in the same center."

Every time we faced an issue, I reminded him:

"I believe we will make this product as perfect as we wish. Let us solve every problem together."

The Final Result

After multiple rounds of testing, redesigning the housing, and solving every small issue, the client finally approved the product. He paid the second 20% deposit, and the bulk production began.

The final order value? $145,540 USD — over one million RMB.

It became the largest single order in my company's history at that time.

Key Takeaways for Lighting Suppliers

This experience taught me several lessons that I now apply to every client relationship:

Final Thoughts

Not every client who asks many questions is a time-waster. Some are engineers at heart. Some are perfectionists. Some are simply testing whether you are the right partner for their big project.

I have learned to treat every inquiry with respect — and to never stop solving problems, even when the process gets difficult.

Because sometimes, the "small client" who asks endless questions today will become your million-RMB order tomorrow.
