When specifying LED lighting for building facades, understanding IP (Ingress Protection) ratings is critical to ensuring long-term performance and reliability. This guide decodes the IP rating system and helps you select the right protection level for your outdoor lighting projects.


Decoding the IP Rating System

IP ratings consist of two digits that indicate protection levels against solid objects and water.

First Digit (Solid Particle Protection)

  • 5: Dust protected (limited ingress, no harmful deposits)

  • 6: Dust tight (complete protection against dust)

Second Digit (Water Protection)

  • 5: Protected against water jets from any direction

  • 6: Protected against powerful water jets

  • 7: Protected against temporary immersion (up to 1m for 30 minutes)

  • 8: Protected against continuous immersion (depth and duration specified by manufacturer)


IP65: Water Jet Protection

What It Means

  • Complete dust protection (6)

  • Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction (5)

Best Applications

  • Building facades under normal weather conditions

  • Covered outdoor areas (canopies, awnings, porticos)

  • Regions with moderate rainfall

  • Vertical wall mounting where water does not pool

Limitations

  • Not suitable for pressure washing

  • Cannot withstand temporary flooding or standing water

  • May fail in coastal environments with salt spray


IP66: Powerful Water Jet Protection

What It Means

  • Complete dust protection (6)

  • Protected against powerful water jets from any direction (6)

Best Applications

  • High-rise building facades exposed to wind-driven rain

  • Coastal installations with salt spray exposure

  • Areas subject to occasional pressure washing

  • Industrial environments with harsh conditions

Advantages Over IP65

  • Higher water pressure resistance (100 kPa vs 30 kPa)

  • Better suited for extreme weather conditions

IP67: Temporary Immersion Protection

  • Complete dust protection (6)

  • Protected against temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes (7)

Best Applications

  • Ground-level facade elements subject to flooding

  • Landscape lighting in areas with poor drainage

  • Regions with heavy monsoon seasons

  • Fixtures mounted near water features or fountains

Important Notes

  • IP67 does NOT mean suitable for permanent underwater installation

  • Depth and duration limits are strictly defined (1m, 30 min)

  • Not automatically better than IP66 for all scenarios


IP68: Continuous Immersion Protection

  • Complete dust protection (6)

  • Protected against continuous immersion under specified conditions (8)

Best Applications

  • Underwater facade features (reflecting pools, fountains)

  • Submerged architectural elements

  • Marine and waterfront installations

  • Extreme environments with prolonged water exposure

Critical Considerations

  • Manufacturer specifies exact depth and duration limits

  • Typically rated for 3+ meters continuous immersion

  • Often includes additional corrosion resistance

  • Significantly higher cost than IP65/IP66


Common Misconceptions

"Higher IP Rating Is Always Better"

Not necessarily. IP67/IP68 fixtures may have reduced thermal dissipation compared to IP66, potentially shortening LED lifespan in hot climates. Choose the minimum rating that meets your environmental requirements.

"IP68 Includes IP66 and IP67"

While technically true for water protection, IP68 fixtures are tested differently. An IP68-rated fixture might not perform as well as IP66 against high-pressure jets. Always verify specific test conditions.

"IP Rating Guarantees Longevity"

IP rating indicates initial protection, not long-term durability. UV exposure, thermal cycling, and material degradation can compromise seals over time.
