From a Small Inquiry to a Million-RMB Custom ODM Order

A custom ODM case study showing how small, exploratory inquiries become fully engineered LED products — from PCB design and IC selection to mechanical integration and IP-rated protection.

The Story at a Glance

Client Inquiry: A simple question — “Can you make something like this?”
Starting Point: A quick sketch, a photo, or a described effect — not a full specification
Process: Iterative design, PCB customization, protocol selection, mechanical integration
Outcome: A fully custom product — and in some cases, a million-dollar order that started as a small, exploratory conversation

How It Started: A Question, Not a Specification

Not every project starts with a clear specification. Some of the most interesting ones begin with a simple question:

“Can you make something like this?”

This is how we approach custom ODM projects — even when the outcome is uncertain. The process isn’t always linear:

  • Sometimes a client sends a quick sketch or a photo.

  • Sometimes they describe an effect they want to achieve, but don’t know which product can deliver it.

  • Sometimes the first idea doesn’t work, and we need to go back to the drawing board.

That’s the nature of truly unique products.

What “Custom ODM” Means at ElisaCustom

When we say custom ODM, we mean full-scope design and engineering — not just assembling standard parts. Here is what that covers:

Capability

What It Means

PCB Design

Custom circuits, form factors, and layouts — not just off-the-shelf boards

IC and Protocol Selection

UCS1903, WS2811, SK6812, or DMX — we match the chip to the application

Mechanical Integration

Fitting LEDs into existing housings, structures, or architectural elements

Voltage and Power Design

DC5V to 24V, optimized for run length and brightness

Environmental Protection

IP ratings from indoor to full outdoor submersion

This is ODM in the truest sense: we design the product, not just manufacture it.

The Process: From Concept to Custom Product

Step 1: Understanding the Vision

The client may not have a full technical specification. They may have:

  • A hand sketch

  • A reference photo

  • A described lighting effect

  • A performance target

Our first job is to translate the vision into engineering requirements.

Step 2: Feasibility and Concept Design

We assess:

  • What LED type and density will achieve the effect

  • What IC and protocol will control it

  • What housing and mechanical structure will contain it

  • What voltage and power design will drive it

  • What IP rating the application requires

Step 3: Prototyping and Iteration

If the first concept doesn’t work, we go back to the drawing board. This is normal — and expected — in custom ODM projects.

Step 4: Production and Delivery

Once the design is confirmed and samples are approved, we move to production — with the same quality standards applied to every unit.

Why Small Inquiries Matter

Some of our largest orders started as small, exploratory conversations.

  • A client testing an idea.

  • A prototype for a new concept.

  • A single sample to show their team.

Those small steps build trust. And trust leads to larger projects.

The million-dollar order didn’t start as a million-dollar order. It started as a question.

Real-World Examples of Custom ODM Projects

Project

Challenge

Custom ODM Solution

Custom Strobe Warning Light

Standard strobe needed SPI pixel control

Custom PCB with UCS1903, 48 RGB LEDs, IP65-IP66

Chain of 9 Pixel Modules

Needed a compact, IP68 chain for outdoor use

Custom module design with UCS1903, 5cm pitch, IP68

Custom DMX Fiber Optic Kit

Standard kit needed DMX programmability

Custom PCB integration with DMX control

Custom S14 Festoon Bulbs

Standard GS8206 needed DMX RGBW

PCB redesign, 80-bulb power injection testing

These projects all started with a question — and ended with a custom product that didn’t exist before.

What This Means for Your Project

If you have a lighting idea that doesn’t fit a standard product, we can help. Our custom ODM process covers:

  • Concept development — from sketch or description to engineering specification

  • PCB and circuit design — custom boards, not off-the-shelf

  • IC and protocol selection — matching the right chip to your application

  • Mechanical integration — fitting into your housing or structure

  • Voltage and power design — optimized for your run length and brightness

  • Environmental protection — IP ratings matched to your installation environment
